What is MTG?

Magic The Gathering is a collectible trading card game created by Richard Garfield in 1993. Players and collectors alike take turns battling each other by casting powerful spells, summoning giant creatures or using ancient artifacts from their own personalized deck; in the hopes of gaining the upper hand over their opponent.

MTG has a constantly changing story exploring various different planes and worlds with many interesting characters and plot lines. The game offers a variety of different formats in which you and your friends can play with the most popular of those being:

  • Commander: 3 - 4 players battle it out to be the last person standing. Each deck is built around a specific legendary creature, chosen by the player to be the Commander. Using the commander’s colour identity players create 100 card decks (including the commander) in which they can only have 1 copy of each card. From there players start with 40 life, and battle their opponents to zero to achieve victory.

  • Standard: Players go head to head in competitive styled games trying to win best of 1 or best of 3 matches. This format requires 60 card decks in which you can use cards from the recently released sets detailed on the Wizards of the Coast website. The goal of each game is to get your opponent from 20 life to zero.

  • Booster Draft: Players create 40 card decks from booster packs, opening one at the time, choosing one card and then passing it around the table until all all the cards are taken. This is then repeated with two more boosters given each player a ‘pool’ of card from which to construct their deck. After each deck has been made, each player will go head to head in best of 3 rounds starting at 20 life with the goal of getting their opponent to zero.

Each of these formats are played on site with Commander being our most popular format.

What do you need to play?

Each format of MTG will require different sized decks. We sell everything you need to play in the store, either as a pre-constructed deck or the boosters you need to build you own deck, for example:

  • Commander: 100 card deck

  • Standard: 60 card deck

  • Draft: Draft booster box (Unless you are playing in one of our draft events then all you will need is to purchase a ticket)

We’d also stock a range of card protection and other accessories for your decks as well, such as:

  • Card Sleeves

  • Deck boxes

  • playmats

  • 6 sided dice

  • 20 sided dice
